Remedial Lab Construction

reading, math, language, remedial lab, assessment tools, instructional workbooks, effective teaching

Some students may be below levels in reading, math, and language, and they need support services such as tutoring, upgrading of the basic skills or study skills. Using individualized instruction, small group instruction, and tutorial sessions, remedial labs provide the setting for this academic support.

Creating a remedial lab involves space, furniture, assessment tools, instructional workbooks, computers, software, staffing, staff training, time schedules, teacher/student ratios, knowledge of effective teaching materials, familiarity with appropriate vendors, and estimated costs. DPdino Educational Consulting Services can help plan all of the features that will create a remedial lab and provide the necessary training for the lab staff.

Individualized and Group Construction

learning style, individualized and group construction, visual style, auditory style

The identification process of how a student learns best is referred to as "learning style." Learning style refers to how students approach tasks, the processes they use, and the behaviors they exhibit. It is their "personally preferred way of learning." The two main types of learners styles are: visual and auditory. Students with a dominant "visual style" are usually sequential learners and prefer individualized instruction. Those with an "auditory style" are usually random learners and prefer to group style instruction. Identifying learning styles allows prediction of effective strategies for teaching.

To accommodate both types of learners, a school setting should provide both types of instruction. Teachers can develop strategies to provide both types of instruction in their classrooms. Individualized and group instruction, both, have certain elements peculiar to them. When properly planned, both can be effective in the classroom.

Daily and weekly schedules can be planned with topics listed for both types of instruction. This will allow students to work alone and in group settings. DPdino Educational Consulting Services can help plan for various strategies that will accommodate both types of learners.

TABE Application in the Classroom

tabe, test of adult basic education, reading, math, language, tabe 9, tabe 10, individualized instruction, group instruction

The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is the main standardized test used as an assessment tool for adult students in the nation. The TABE measures a student's ability in reading, math, and language; and the scores indicate the grade levels at which the student is performing. Teachers use these scores to plan remedial work for the students. However, there are aspects of the test that teachers should notice, like the format, the timing of parts, and the critical thinking that is involved. Many students are not familiar with the test's format, and this can affect their performances on the test. Likewise, other aspects can be test-taking obstacles.

Teachers can learn how to use the results of the TABE to make effective study plans for their students. DPdino Educational Consulting Services can help teachers understand TABE 9 & 10, the types of scores, the order of instruction, the interpretation of scores, the test's format, and the problems students encounter. Teachers will also learn the various teaching strategies that can be used in the classroom, utilizing both individualized and group instruction.

ESOL Student Transition to ABE

english speakers of other languages, esol, ged, vocabulary, native language interference, english composition, tabe

English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) attend English language classes in the United States. Upon completion, they usually have need for further basic skills training in order to attain a GED or enter a career-tech training program. They can continue to upgrade their basic skills by enrolling in an ABE classroom. However, their status as ABE students will be different than their native English-speaking counterparts. The ESOL student will encounter several unique problems that may hinder their learning in an ABE setting. ABE teachers should be aware of these problems and make necessary adjustments to ensure success for these students.

The learning problems that are unique to ESOL students include those pertaining to vocabulary, native language interference, English composition, the TABE format, the timing restraints of their standardized testing, the variety of idioms, metaphors, and proverbs, and the solitary strategy of individualized instruction. DPdino Educational Consulting Services can provide teaching strategies that will make the ESOL students transition easier and more effective.
